The New #1 Team in the Country by Teddy June

The Connecticut Huskies! Yet another week in College Basketball and yet another Number 1 emerges as the previous #1 falters. This week the Huskies slide up from the 2 slot to the number 1 ranking. Connecticut is 20-1 on the season and is really clicking on all cylinders right now. They have won 9 straight games since a loss against Georgetown and are coming off their best offensive performance of the season against Providence. The Huskies are led by the double, double machine Jeff Adrien who is averaging a team high 14.1ppg and 10.0rpg.  Following him Jerome Dyson is averaging 13.5, Thabeet 13.0 and Price 12.3. The x-factor for this team right now has to be the contributions of Stanley Robinson. A highly regarded recruit out of Alabama begun to get into the swing of things towards the end of the season last year but over the summer was ruled out of being eligible to play in the fall semester. Has since returned for spring semester and is beginning to look like the Robinson we saw in March of last year. He had 18 points and 7 rebounds against the Friars this past weekend. The Huskies have been a very efficient team on both ends of the floor this year. They are averaging 79.1ppg and shooting 48.9% from the field on the offensive end. On the defensive side they are holding opponents to 61.8ppg and just 38% from the field including 31% from 3 point range.

Connecticut has some solid wins thus far in Conference play but has certainly played their hardest tests on their schedule yet. This Monday they have a huge road game against arguably the hottest team in the country outside of them in the Cardinals. Louisville has already knocked out a number 1 in Pitt a few weeks ago, Can they do it again? Following that game the Huskies have home games against Michigan in a non-conference clash and Syracuse. Additionally the Huskies still have to play Pitt twice and Marquette on the road. They end the year in a game at Pittsburgh, no easy task to say the least.  Another week and another number 1 emerged and once again the number 1 has a very hard task to stay atop the rankings for very long. It should be interesting to see down the stretch of the year who emerges atop the rankings and who grabs the number 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament.

The Big East Mid-Season Picture by Teddy June

We are about a month into Conference play and it has become clearly evident that the Big East is the deepest conference in the nation. It can certainly be argued that the ACC maybe a better conference at the top with UNC, Wake and Duke leading the way but the Big East top to bottom is overall a deeper league. It is very conceivable that come March Madness this conference could put in 10 teams to the big dance with it looking like we will definitely at least see 8. Marquette and Louisville lead the way atop the standings both at 6-0 SU. The Golden Eagles are an interesting team with key senior leaders but have played by far the easiest Big East schedule out of any of the teams in the top 10 of the conference. They have only played two road conference games thus far and have yet to play any of the big dogs in the conference. That being said they end the season with just a murderous schedule. They play at Georgetown, at home against UConn, at Louisville, at Pittsburgh and then finish the season at home against Syracuse. Louisville’s 6-0 has been far more impressive as they own road wins at Villanova and Syracuse and home wins over Pittsburgh and Notre Dame.  This was a team many people had high hopes for but early season stumbles and an overall lack of focus early the year had many concerned. They have now won 7 straight games and really seem to be clicking as a unit.

Connecticut and Pittsburgh follow up after Marquette and Louisville in the conference standings. Arguably the two best teams in the conference, Connecticut is 7-1 SU while Pittsburgh is 6-1 SU. Connecticut has kind of quietly flown under the radar on the national picture as funny as that sounds considering they are ranked 3rd in the country. But they lost at Georgetown and have since really just quietly sat in the background behind Wake, Duke and UNC. The Huskies have won 7 straight and have really begun to click as a team since Stanley Robinson joined them again. While Robinson has not provided any stat worthy numbers he has provided a spark and a legit small forward who can get up and down the court with the best of them. The Huskies though are in a similar scheduling situation to Marquette as they haven’t played an overly tough early season schedule. They won at West Virginia and at Notre Dame both impressive wins but they still have some really tough games left. They have play at Louisville, Marquette and finish their last game of the year at Pittsburgh. Additionally they have a non conference matchup with Michigan in a few weeks, a team that has shown they can take down the big dogs with wins over UCLA and Duke. I will say the longer this season as gone on the better AJ Price has played as he is coming off major knee surgery and really has begun to get things going in recent weeks. Pittsburgh is a team that has played a pretty easy early season schedule with very few non-conference tests but has played well in their big conference games thus far. They have road wins at Georgetown and at West Virginia. The interesting thing about their schedule is I think it may be the easiest out of all the top dogs in the Big East. Their toughest road challenge for the rest of the year is at Connecticut, the game is at the XL center, which crowd wise reminds me of a mid to low level NBA team’s home crowd, terrible. They also have a road test at Villanova this week and home games against Notre Dame, West Virginia and Marquette, 2 of those teams don’t travel particularly well. They finish the year at home against UConn, so it is conceivable they have the easiest schedule out of the big dogs and could finish atop the Big East standings.

The remaining teams shake out with Providence at 5-2 SU, Syracuse 5-3 SU, Villanova 3-3 SU, WVU, 3-3 SU, Georgetown 3-3 SU and Notre Dame 3-4 SU. Providence has been a nice surprise under Keno Davis and really have improved tremendously offensively as the season has progressed. However, they have a very difficult schedule down the stretch. Both Notre Dame and Georgetown are in dire need of grabbing a win. The Irish have lost 3 tough games, 2 on the road and 1 at home to UConn. They face Marquette on Big Monday this week and then have 3 straight road games including at Pittsburgh and at UCLA.  Georgetown meanwhile has lost several games in a row including on Sunday they lost to Seton Hall. The one thing none of these top 10 teams can afford to do is lose to anyone else in the conference. Their just simply isn’t room for letdowns against the poor teams of the conference and the Hoyas will need to bounce back quickly.

It will be very interesting to see how this conference shakes out as the season progresses. There may not have ever been a time in College Basketball where one conference had so much depth and I can tell you one thing; I can’t wait for the Big East Tournament, as that is going to be a lot of fun to watch!

The New #1 team in the country by Teddy June

The 16-0 SU Wake Forest Demon Deacons! An impressive last couple weeks for the Demon Deacons as they started the run with a 7 point road win at BYU ending the Cougars longest home winning streak in the nation. They then traveled home and took down UNC leading throughout and winning by 3 points. After which traveled to Boston College for what looked like a terrible “sandwich” spot for them and they showed up big winning easily by 20 points. Most recently this past weekend they pulled off yet another impressive performance as they took down Clemson in Clemson by 10 and ended the Tigers undefeated season.  With this impressive week and several weeks run by the Deacons, they have catapulted up to number 1 in this week’s top 25 rankings. The big reason for this team’s success has been their efficiency both offensively and defensively. They rank 5th in the nation in points per game at 85.1 and 3rd in the nation in FG% at 51.1%. On the defensive end they rank 2nd in the nation in FG% against at 36.2 and 7th in the nation in 3 point shooting against at 28.3%.

The difference maker and offensive leader has been Jeff Teague. Teague has taken his game to a completely different level this year averaging 21.4ppg and shooting 53% from the field including 52% from 3 point range. The Deacons have 3 other double digit scorers with Johnson averaging 13.4ppg, Aminu averaging 12.8, and McFarland averaging 10.5ppg. While Wake Forest has certainly gotten through some of their toughest tests thus far, they still have several big tests on deck. Wednesday January 28th they have a home game against Duke and then on February 22nd they travel to Cameron indoor. Additionally they finish the year at home against Clemson it what should be an exciting rematch. It’s doubtful this team will make it through ACC play undefeated with entirely too many road games and tough tests left, but they have certainly made an early season statement with some huge wins and will be a major player in the NCAA tournament this season.
